		<description>Chelsea Music Festival: Cardume premiere – Live Visual for Cardume

Role:&#38;nbsp; Art Director, Visual Artist, Programmer, 2024Live visual for The CARDUME trio, featuring world-class percussionists Rogério Boccato (Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo), Keita Ogawa (Snarky Puppy), &#38;amp; Cleber Almeida from Brazil, will celebrate the official release of their new record. Show at the Chelsea Music Festival.

The new collaboration between Cardume and visual artist and technologist Nitcha Tothong is inspired by the fluidity, collectiveness, and liveliness of Cardume's music. For this performance, live visual coding transforms real-time improvisation into dynamic graphic experiences by algorithmically blending generative patterns with hand-drawn elements that respond to live inputs.
Artists manipulate code and trigger parameters on the fly, creating visual compositions where every keystroke and audio cue leads to immediate changes in color, form, and movement across the screen. The hand-drawn components add organic texture and a human touch, while algorithmic processes generate complex patterns and procedural animations that evolve. This hybrid approach captures the spontaneity of improvisation through reactive systems, transforming code into a visual instrument that produces ephemeral digital compositions unique to each performance, reflecting Cardume's improvisational style.

The animation breaks into three phrase loops, first, visualizing the feeling of being held captive inside a cage, without access to everything everyone else has, kept invisible from the rest of society, and deemed an enslaved person to the country. The idea that cages keep people safe is a myth. Prison is a cycle; it only continues the lack of healing. Caging is a violent act; it isolates people.

&#60;img width="600" height="338" width_o="600" height_o="338" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/349970e8dd16b7c0bb1f58d4de9c770c6aba39baf0088404a10e64ce404bcb9c/2_transformation.gif" data-mid="193922721" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/349970e8dd16b7c0bb1f58d4de9c770c6aba39baf0088404a10e64ce404bcb9c/2_transformation.gif" /&#62;
The second loop is the transformation, moving past captivity inside one’s mind.

The last part is flourishing outward inside the cage, into one’s true potential, and finding peace and forgiveness within, which gives way to learning, growth, and love. Keeping the faith that they will be cherished, remembered, honored, and loved regardless of captivity.

The visualizer animation for ‘Grace’ combines a frame-by-frame digital drawing loop and audio-reactive creative coding techniques to portray Grace’s emotional states,&#38;nbsp;The eyes are hand-drawn and illustrated with rough lines to conform with the generative graphics. They are the only tangible elements that communicate the emotions in the darkness by switching between direct gaze with the audience, looking away, and shutting down.
The song is very dynamic, especially with the drum sounds, which are very effective with the ragged lines and graphics that audio-react to specific parts of the song, creating new emotions for viewers. The audio-reactive graphics were created in P5.js and hydra.js, my usual tools for which I wrote a custom code for this project.

Trombone, Effects, and Voice :&#38;nbsp;Kalia Vandever
From the album 'We Fell In Turn’ on AKP Recordings.

The animation expresses the feeling of intimacy, soothing, and healing, which simulates the same sense when listening to 'Temper the Wound.'
The visuals trigger haptic sense by using gently rubbing gestures from the audience's point of view. It also reveals a scar on the hand that caresses in the form of memory metaphor to the wound itself has the healing power.
'Temper the Wound' is part of Kalia's debut album 'We Fell In Turn' is improvisational — a stark palate of solo trombone, voice, effects, and little more. Connecting the dots between Jeff Parker’s Forfolks, and early releases from Grouper, 'We Fell In Turn' is a study of space and patience, embracing vulnerability in its sparse adornment. At times, the album is reminiscent of Patrick Shiroishi’s Hidemi, both in its familial inspiration and solo instrument study, while sharing the ineffable feel of William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops — the traces of her trombone folding in on themselves in an organic loop. Emotionally generous throughout, Vandever acts as a torchbearer for jazz’s historical yearning for connection.

This animation for ‘Mirrored Solitude’, the visual of one’s being revolving in repetition comes to mind as it imitates the music and sound in this piece and symbolizes cycles of different states of mind.

The loop indicates the time passing and moving through all the emotions, from joy to anger to calm. As it’s a loop, the beginning is its end and vice versa; getting lost in where we are in the cycle while the person standstill and is being themselves.
